Favorite pastime has turned the simple housewife into an enterprising business-woman. The homely atmosphere is unmistakable at her café, and adjacent to it is her office. With the warmth of a homely environment at the workplace and familiar faces of regular customers patronizing the place, business seems to come easy.
“We must know the business we’re involved in. I create my own recipes, widen my knowledge in gardening and work smart and systematically; that’s why I can rely on my staff,” she reveals.
Romlah’s business seems to bring much happiness to the whole family as most of the time, her husband, two grown up sons and teenage daughter are gathered there. The café especially, is like their home and they enjoy being a part of the business. Romlah brings out the home atmosphere in the café out of her love and nature. Most of all, her business has indeed brought out the best in her family.
She earns her husband’s respect for her diligence and excellent performance in the business, and she is amazed how that enhances her marriage life.
“He is my faithful supporter.” She says of her husband, “I have proved to him that I can do it. However his blessings and support, I may not have come this far. Actually, whatever I do for business comes from the heart, meaning, it is something I love to do. At first it was for fun but when I saw the money in it, I was motivated to utilized all that I enjoy doing.”
Romlah, who hails from Penang, came to Sarawak 24 years ago to follow her husband who was born and bred in Kuching. She feels she belongs to the Siol Kandis community, which comprises mainly Iban and Malays.
“I love the people here. Most of my workers are from the neighborhood.” She speaks fervently of the place, “I love Sarawak. If you talk about business opportunities, of course it’s better in Semenanjung; and I know I can do better in Penang, but it is not just the money. To me, the most important thing is happiness. This is what money cannot buy. I’d rather be happy with what I am now that to pursue more money at the expense of my happiness. And happiness to me is a good family and nice friends.”
In her first place, her family was the reason for her business to be close to her house. The positive side to sheer boredom is that it can bring her into a state of enthusiasm as it avails her opportunity to dream on. Today, Romlah is a far cry from the boring housewife she was.
“Don’t waste whatever talent you have. Don’t you know sometimes fun and hobby can bring in the money? Later, you may find yourself contributing to the family and will feel good about it.” She concludes.
